You can get smaller bridge pins that require smaller holes, which would reduce the amount of perforation of the bridge, top, and bridge plate.

    I can't see why 12 separate pins would be a liability.

    I am talking to a luthier about an instrument right now who builds using this construction. Maybe some people simply try to 'invent the wheel' again. Rob's comment about the pain is certainly the best way to describe the idea of using double strings on a single post or in a single slot. Almost every commercially-produced string I've seen has used twelve bridge pins.
